Awaiting further information from California on Emissions
NAFEM continues to monitor for new information on California’s planned HFC prohibitions and NOx emission reductions.
- The California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by adopting the prohibitions on the use of certain refrigerants originally proposed in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) that was vacated by the U.S. Court of Appeals.
- The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is creating standards to measure and reduce NOx emissions from charbroilers and other appliances with burners. These plans ladder up to SCAQMD’s plans to reduce NOx emissions by 17 percent by 2022, with subsequent reductions through 2031.
Additionally, California Assembly Bill 3232 that would have required zero-emission buildings by 2030 has been amended. It now requires the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission to assess – by January 1, 2021 – the potential for the state to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases from residential and commercial building stock by at least 40 percent below 1990 levels by January 1, 2030.
