Steel/aluminum tariffs continue to impact trade partners

While the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Canada and Mexico were removed in May, they continue for numerous countries. Twenty-five percent tariffs on steel currently impact all countries except Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Ten percent tariffs on aluminum currently impact all countries except Argentina, Australia, Canada and Mexico.

Domestic steel production is now at more than 81 percent of capacity, according to the industry’s data. The administration’s stated aim in imposing tariffs was to help increase this level to 80 percent.

The Coalition of American Metal Manufacturers and Users (CAMMU) has urged the administration to terminate the remaining Section 232 tariffs as quickly as possible.
