USMCA to be renamed?
Incoming Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has created a discussion on his social media networks to identify an alternative name to United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). He is recommending the change for two reasons; the acronym doesn’t adequately describe the agreement – which would actually be considered a treaty in Mexico – and there isn’t an adequate Spanish translation for USMCA.
President-elect Obrador, who takes office December 1, has suggested two names, and requested alternatives from the public:
- TEUMECA – translated to treaty between the United States, Mexico and Canada; and,
- T-MEC – translated to treaty between Mexico, United States and Canada.
