Amplifying Members’ Voices

NAFEM regularly joins forces with other organizations to advance the industry’s perspective with elected and appointed officials. Highlights of recent outreach include:

  • NAFEM, along with other manufacturing associations, expressed concern over the recent addition of 407 HTS codes to the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs, urging the Dept. of Commerce to “eliminate further unpredictable expansions, provide comprehensive guidance, ensure a transparent stakeholder consultation process and make targeted determinations with a clear nexus to national security. If these or other tariffs are impacting your business, let your representatives in Congress know via the NAFEM Advocacy Action Center.
  • NAFEM urged California Governor Newsom to veto SB 682 that confuses PFAS with fluoropolymers like PTFE that is safely used on cookware and would force cookware distribution, sales and related activity out of the state.
  • As states continue to consider extended producer responsibility programs (EPR) to reduce landfill use and expand recycling access, NAFEM joined the American Chemistry Council and others in encouraging Colorado to build an EPR program that is both practical and forward thinking, ensuring a technology-neutral approach that encourages innovation, as well as one that is achievable and flexible to meet today’s and tomorrow’s statutory requirements. Doing so can “advance Colorado’s leadership in circularity.”
  • NAFEM and other manufacturing and technology associations, plus chambers of commerce, asked leaders of the House and Senate committees on Armed Services to strike sections 836 and 863 of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. This “right to repair” language would require contractors to provide the government with “fair and reasonable access” to all repair parts, tools and information, forcing the disclosure of companies’ sensitive, privately funded IP and trade secrets, which the Department of Defense could then share with third parties, including direct competitors. More information is included in this white paper from the National Defense Industrial Association.
